From time to time I come across work that is really special and I know there is a big market that simply hasn't seen the work. Creating a good online presence with website, social media, mailing list, newsletters and so on can prove very expensive and rather overwhelming sometimes so from time to time I will offer a 'commission only' service instead of my usual fixed price service. I do not charge for any of my setup or ongoing maintenance services but instead charge a flat 20% commission fee on all website and Etsy shop sales.
I ask customers to think of me like a gallery where they will prepare and submit their work, the gallery markets it and then it takes a fee (often 50%) or returns their work after a period. In this instance I market the work for them by creating a professional well laid out website well stocked with their products and search engine optimised. They sell product through an ecommerce shop that pays everything to them and then once every 3 months I invoice them for 20% of sales for that 3 months. My service is much cheaper than a gallery, sells their work internationally 24/7 rather than locally 9-5, Monday - Sunday and creates a biproduct of a great online presence that brings in other work such as commissions, workshops, event attendance and so on. It is in my interest to get it right as all the risk in the cost of the development is mine.
It is a huge task to set all this up, it is something I can only run for a handful of customers due to the risk involved for me and I cannot take multiple new customers on board at once so there may be a wait for the service but if it is something that interests you and you think you have a product that might fit this and the thought of doing it yourself overwhelms you then please get in touch to discuss.
Sound interesting? Lower than gallery commission but marketing globally 24/7 not to mention raising your profile. Does that sound too good to be true? So why do I offer that? Well I cannot offer it to everyone. I need to see a product that I feel has great potential first. Not just any product but one that stands out from the crowd. I want to see a sales track record. It doesn't have to be amazing it simply needs to show that your product sells and that you have the determination to succeed.
My thought process is that as in many walks of life you cannot be good at everything. You excel at your craft but marketing it is often a means to an end and something that keeps you out of the studio. You can pay for marketing services but they are often short lived and you have to keep stopping and starting and justifying costs. With this model I see a long term partnership developing. You do what you are good at and I do what I am good at and we complement each other throughout our relationship.
All the risk is mine as the investment initially is all mine and it will take several months to get things moving and you will have to provide lots of input as I build things for you. Each new client will tie me up for several months so there is often a waiting list for several months. Once things are up and running, however, I need commitment from you - I will get you started with your mailing lists, social media posts, blogging etc but I do not have the time to keep that up for everybody. You will be expected to take up the reigns once I show you how and I will step back and advise rather than do things for you freeing up time for me to get more involved in special campaigns, holiday marketing, sales and so on.
Timescales will be advised at time of order. As this service is not paid for up front but can only pay for itself once commissions start to come in it is important to go live with this solution BEFORE all products have been loaded. You are therefore advised to identify your fastest moving product first so that we can go live with perhaps 25 products then continue to add additional products as quickly as possible once we have gone live so that the website is able to start working for you (and me) much quicker and builds up data that will help us optimise remaining products better.
No fees up front service - pay for the service through a 20% fee on on-line sales that way if I do not deliver what I promise I simply don't get paid and you risk nothing! Cheaper than galleries and with a much greater reach!
