Book-It Outlook Security Bypass


Some users of Outlook later than version 2000 SP1 may experience a message from Outlook similar to the one below every time they send an email from their Book-It software. This is because Book-It uses Microsoft Basic technology employed in Outlook from version 2000 onwards in order to instruct Outlook how to send its emails. Unfortunately this same technology has also been abused by virus writers, for example. In a bid to protect users Microsoft introduced this security warning message to alert users that another piece of software is trying to control Outlook and to ask if this should be permitted.

This can be a minor annoyance when sending out small quantities of emails, however, for large batches it can be extremely impractical. Microsoft itself has provided a work around for the problem. Unfortunately, however, it is only available for users of their Exchange Server mail server system and is complicated for the computer novice to install. For those Book-It users without a Microsoft Exchange Server or simply requiring a more straight forward approach we have now secured an alternate solution. We have purchased some 3rd party software which can be installed alongside our Book-It software and will allow Book-It to talk to Outlook bypassing the above message altogether.

How Much Does The Bypass Software Cost?

The current version of the software is charged as a one-off fee based on the number of Book-It licenses you currently have. This fee is currently £30+VAT per Book-It license.

Will There Be Any Further Costs?

We cannot guarantee that the software will work with Outlook versions that might be released after Outlook 2003, however, we are sure that it will be in the interests of the authors of the software to ensure that they do support future versions. If we have to purchase future versions of the software to pass on to customers in the future it is likely that we will make a similar small charge to cover our costs (unless of course Microsoft make it easier for legitimate software like Book-It to work with their Outlook product without the annoying messages).

Can I Buy Just One Version Of The Software Although I Have Multiple Book-It Licenses?

No, because of the way the software is deployed you must install it on all workstations using Book-It and therefore will be charged for the same number of licenses.

Why Is The Software Not Included In Book-It?

The bypass software has not been written by Instinctive Systems, it has been purchased from a 3rd party with a license to pass the software on to our customers. As we have had to purchase the software ourselves as well as provide installation and support services, documentation, tutorials we need to cover our own costs. As a FREE fix is available from Microsoft as described above it would be unfair to pass this cost on to all customers so we only pass it on to those who need it.

What Guarantees Come With The Software?

As the software is produced by a 3rd party rather than ourselves it does not come with the same guarantees or support that your standard Book-It software comes with. We use the software ourselves and have customers using it so we know it works. As with any software, however, there will be environments where there might be problems and there may be issues when new versions of Outlook come out before this software can support it. Whilst we will do our utmost to liaise between our own customers and the developers of the software, we do not have our own support agreement with them and we cannot guarantee to resolve every issue. We also cannot be held responsible for any problems caused to your system by installing the 3rd party software. You should carefully check the software agreement provided by the manufacturer before installing the software. We can, however, guarantee that we will not charge you for the software and our support in installing it until it is installed and working.
