Gallery Design Hints

For best results using this gallery software please try to adhere to the following standards. Whilst the standards are not absolutely compulsory, they are designed so that you can obtain maximum effect from your photographs whilst also assuming that many of your visitors may still be using relatively slow 56kb modems as opposed to newer and faster technologies such as ADSL.

Gallery

To create a new gallery simply create a new folder under your main Gallery folder.

Gallery Picture

To create a picture for the front cover of each Gallery store the picture as index.jpg in the new gallery folder. For best results resize the picture to 100 x 80 pixels.

Topics

Within each gallery you can create several topics. To create a topic simply create a folder under the required gallery folder with the name of the topic. Within each topic create 3 additional folders called images, thumbnails and captions

Photos

To add a photo to a topic first add the full size photo to the images folder under the topic. It is recommended that you store images of approximately 300 x 400 pixels. You can store bigger images if you wish, however, these may take up a lot of space and take a long time to download on slower modems. Aim for image sizes no larger than 60kb but ideally around 35kb.

Thumbnails

Once you have stored a photo, use your graphics software to resize the photo to around 40 x 50 pixels then save with the same filename as the original image in the thumbnails folder. Thumbnails should be 2kb or less in size.

Captions

To add a caption to an image, simply create a 3rd file in the relevant captions folder. This file should have the same name as the original image with a .txt on the end i.e. an image mypicture.jpg would have a caption file called mypicture.jpg.txt. Use Windows notepad or a similar text editor to add you caption text.
